The 35-year-old woman suffered fatal injuries after a multi-vehicle collision that authorities allege was caused by an intoxicated driver.
According to investigators, the crash occurred on May 10 at approximately 5:24 p.m. near 2780 South Highland Avenue, just north of Butterfield Road. Police say a Volvo driven by a South Elgin man allegedly struck another vehicle before crossing over a grass parkway and crashing into a Subaru Outback driven by Laura O’Keefe. The impact caused catastrophic damage to both vehicles.
Laura suffered traumatic brain injuries and underwent emergency surgery before being placed on life support. Despite medical efforts, she sadly passed away Tuesday, leaving loved ones devastated by the sudden and tragic loss. A passenger in her vehicle also sustained serious injuries and was admitted to an intensive care unit.
Authorities have charged 48-year-old Dwayne Rushing with aggravated DUI causing death and aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm. Prosecutors allege officers at the scene observed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and the odor of alcohol. Officials further stated that his blood alcohol content was measured above the legal limit and that an open alcoholic beverage was recovered from the vehicle.
